Atlantic City Surf News Release

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (May 13, 2003) – Chad Gambill went 4-4 and drove in two runs in the Surf's big first inning to help Atlantic City snap its three-game losing streak over the Somerset Patriots, 5-4, Tuesday evening at the Sandcastle.

The Surf wasted no time against Somerset southpaw Robert Dodd (0-2), ripping him for five runs off five hits at the start of the contest.

After loading the bases with an intentional walk to Emison Soto, Dodd surrendered four straight hits from newly acquired Jeremy Booth, Gambill, Ric Johnson and Brandon Jackson as the Surf gained the 5-0 early advantage.

Surf starter Anthony Chavez was on point through six innings pitched, allowing just two runs, one earned, on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Dodd, who settled down after the first inning, ended up lasting five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out six Surf batters and walking three.

Somerset scored its first run on a passed ball in the third inning and its second on a poor decision by Surf infielders that resulted in a double-steal in the sixth.

An RBI single by Emilio Escandon in the seventh pulled the Patriots within two runs at 5-3, but Surf relievers Mark Rutherford, Rene Vega and Randi Mallard kept in the final three innings.

Despite allowing an unearned run in the ninth, Mallard got Eric Martins to fly out to leftfield to end the game and pick up his third save of the season.

Trey Beamon and Jackson added two hits apiece for the Surf, who improve to 4-7 on the season. Somerset drops to 3-8 on the year.

The Surf and the Patriots will play the second game of the series on Wednesday, May 14, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle. A fireworks show courtesy of the Atlantic City Surf will follow the game.
