Atlantic City Surf News Release
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (May 13, 2003) Atlantic City Surf general manager Mario Perrucc i today announced the signing of first baseman/catcher Emison Soto, first baseman Pat Burns, and catcher Jeremy Booth.
Soto returns for his third stint with the Surf, playing with Atlantic City during the 1999 and 2001 seasons. In 2001, Soto batted .312 with 21 home runs, 26 doubles and 68 RBI and was named as one of the Surfs five representatives on th e South Division All-Star squad.
Burns, an Atlantic League All-Star last season with the Pennsylvania Road Warriors, batted .274 with 25 doubles, eight home runs, and 41 RBI in 2002. The switch-hitter has hit 20 or more doubles in each of the last five seasons.
Originally drafted by the New York Mets in the fifth round of the 1996 draft, Burns spent the previous six seasons in rookie ball and single A with the Mets before signing with the Road Warriors last year.
Booth, a big 6-5, 230-pound catcher acquired from the Bridgeport Bluefish, should step in right away at a backstop pos ition that has been decimated by early season injuries.
He has played independent baseball every other season since 1998, most recently with Solano of the Western League last year, where he hit .327 with 24 doubles and 48 RBI in his best professional season to date.
These new players should address some of our problem areas that we have come across early this season, said Perrucci. Its great to have Emison Soto back. He was an All-Star for us in 2001 and has proven he can be an asset to this organization. Burns is a strong switch-hitting first baseman and Booth will contribute at a very thin position for us immediately.
Soto and Booth will join the team tonight against Somerset, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle, while Burns will make his debut on Friday, May 16, at Camden.
