Atlantic City Surf News Release
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (July 4, 2003) â The Atlantic City Surf defeated the Pennsylvania Road Warriors, 11-8, in front of an Atlantic League record crowd of 8,022, 4th of July evening, at the Sandcastle.
The mark eclipses the previous Atlantic League record of 7,471 at Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J., on September 6, 2002. It also shattered the previous Sandcastle record of 6,780 set on last year's July 4th game.
As for the game, the Road Warriors jumped out to a big 6-0 lead after Jose Amador crushed a two run home run and Ortiz followed four batters later with a grand slam to right field, both off starter Maximo Nunez in the second inning.
The Surf countered in the bottom half of the inning when Juan Thomas walked, Jose Velazquez was hit by a pitch and Raul Marval walked, setting the stage for an opposite field grand slam by Pat Burns .
Tied 6-6 in the sixth, Burns stepped up again and laced his second homer of the game to give the Surf a one-run lead.
After the Road Warriors tallied two runs in the top of the eighth to take a one-run lead, Atlantic City answered with a four run inning, keyed by a bases loaded walk by Thomas and a two-run double by Velazquez.
Travis Thompson (2-2) picked up the win for the Surf after going four and two-third innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Atlantic City closer Randi Mallard tossed a scoreless ninth for his 14th save of the season.
