Ambassadors Downed in Elmira, 6-3

The Allentown Ambassadors led 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, but the Elmira Pioneers scored two in the sixth and three in the bottom of the seventh to go on and win 6-3 Monday night in Elmira.

Allentown got a solo home run from Vic Davilla in the first to get out to a 1-0 lead. Elmira would tie the game in the bottom of the second, when Brian Jones walked with one out, then moved to third on a double from Alex Marconi. Cedrick Harris tried to make a great diving catch on Marconi's hit, but had the ball bounce over him to allow the runners to move up a base. Ryan Lehr then hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

The Ambassadors took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on Marlon Roche's third home run of the season, a two run opposite field shot.

But Elmira immediately tied it up in the bottom of the inning of Ambassador starter Nolan Fry. Cleatus Davidson had an infield single on a ball that Tito Cruz bobbled and then threw away, allowing Davidson to advance to second on the throwing error. Rafael Alvarez then walked. Scott Hunter then popped out, but Brian Jones would double with two outs and drive in both Davidson and Alvarez to tie the game.

Wade Clark came in to pitch in the seventh. Alex Marconi doubled to begin the inning. After Clark got Bello and Webb, with Marconi moving to third. Dennis Abreu then dropped a perfect bunt down the first base line for a base hit giving Elmira the lead. A walk and two more singles from Alvarez and Scott Hunter pushed the score to 6-3.

The Ambassadors did get the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Ryan Bordenick grounded out to end the game.

Geronimo Mendoza got the win, pitching six innings in relief, allowing two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out one. Mendoza is now 6-4. Clark took his second loss, he is now 1-2. The Ambassadors have now lost three in a row and are 1-3 in the second half. Elmira improved to 3-1.
