Atlantic City Surf News Release

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (July 14, 2003) – Mark Rutherford tossed seven innings of shutout baseball to lead the Atlantic City Surf in a 6-0 victory over the Pennsylvania Road Warriors, Monday evening at the Sandcastle.

Rutherford (3-2), who usually appears out of the bullpen for the Surf, shined in his second start of the season as he surrendered just three hits while striking out three and walking one.

Juan Thomas gave the Surf an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single that plated Ric Johnson, who walked.

Johnson then stepped up in the second inning and roped a one-run single of his own that scored Chad Gambill, who singled to lead off the inning.

With Atlantic City ahead 3-0 in the fifth inning, Jose Velazquez led off with a double and newly acquired Creighton Gubanich followed with a two-run homer, his first in a Surf uniform, over the left field wall that gave his team a five-run lead.

Brandon Jackson, Marval, Velazquez and Gambill each had two hits apiece for Atlantic City.

Southpaw reliever Scott Navarro, acquired from Somerset earlier in the day, allowed no runs in the final two innings to close the game out for the Surf

The Surf improve to 3-1 in the second half while the Road Warriors fall to 0-4.

ON DECK: The Surf and the Road Warriors play the second game of the series on Tuesday, July 15, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle. A fireworks show will follow the game, sponsored by Morgan Stanley.
