Pride Look to Rebound on the Road

July 14, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release

After a tough home three game sweep at the hands of the Ducks over the weekend (two of the losses were by just a single run), Nashua heads to Somerset to take on the Patriots. Somerset and Nashua split a four-game series in Nashua right before the All-Star break, so the Pride won't be taking Somerset lightly, despite the fact that the Pats finished last in the South Division in the first half. The Pride's pitching in the Ducks series was mostly solid, as both Archie Corbin and Paxton Crawford pitched well despite suffering losses. It was the Pride's bats that fell silent, as Damien Sapp's two solo homers in the series were some of the few bright spots for the Pride. But the first-half champions have little reason to worry, as an upcoming six-game homestand vs. Newark and Pennsylvania should be an opportune time for the Pride to have a break out performance.

ALL-STARS SHINE AT HOLMAN

Last Wednesday's Atlantic League All-Star game at Holman Stadium was one of the greatest sporting spectacles this state has ever seen. Rickey Henderson led the South to a 2-1 victory, going 1-for-2 with a walk, a double and the game-winning RBI, and the Pride were well-represented, with 10 players on the team, and Butch Hobson and Rick Wise coaching. Over 4400 fans made it into the park, as the game attracted fans and media from all over the country. The story of the game was picked up by news outlets nationwide, local & regional coverage was outstanding, and even the Tokyo Broadcasting Company came by to film the happenings. It was a historic event that will go down in the annals of Holman Stadium history alongside Newcombe and Campanella, and we can't wait to do it again in a few years.

As you may have heard, former Pride slugger Curtis Pride recently returned to the majors for the first time since 2001 with the New York Yankees. He homered in his first game with the Yanks, and is by all accounts the first player in history to homer in his first games with both the Yankees and Red Sox. He is also not the only Pride alum in the MLB news, as former Pride pitcher Brendan Donnelly was named to the American League All-Star game. Donnelly is the first Atlantic League alum to go on to earn a berth on a MLB All-Star team.

SURF SET LEAGUE ATTENDANCE RECORD OF 8,022

The Atlantic City Surf defeated the Pennsylvania Road Warriors, 11-8, in front of an Atlantic League record crowd of 8,022, 4th of July evening, at the Sandcastle. The mark eclipses the previous Atlantic League record of 7,471 at Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J., on September 6, 2002. It also shattered the previous Sandcastle record of 6,780 set on last year's July 4th game.

DUCKS SIGN DEVEY

Long Island Ducks team officials announced they have come to contract terms with left-handed pitcher Phil Devey. In addition, the contract of pitcher Jason Dennis was assigned to the Pennsylvania Road Warriors. 2003 is Devey's fifth season in professional baseball, and has a career minor league record of 24-24 with a 4.12 ERA and two saves in 106 games. Dennis was 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA in fifteen games for the Ducks this season. He allowed just one home run in 30.1 innings of work while striking out 17 batters.
