JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (19-20, 56-53) earned a series victory over the Montgomery Biscuits (20-19, 54-55) with a 6-2 win at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Wednesday night. Jacksonville takes the series win after winning three of the first four over Montgomery in the final five-game set of the year between the clubs.
Jacksonville starter Bryan Evans (1-0) earned the win in his first Double-A start, as he threw six strong innings allowing only one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts. Taking the loss for the Biscuits was starter Alex Colome (1-1), his first loss in three Southern League starts.
After a Henry Wrigley RBI single gave Montgomery a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Suns tied the game in the bottom of the third when Paul Gran brought home a run on a groundout to first. The Biscuits quickly broke the tie in the top of the fourth, with a Greg Sexton groundout scoring Cole Figueroa to put the Biscuits back ahead 2-1.
The Suns answered in the bottom of the fourth. With Ben Lasater, who doubled to lead off the inning, at third and Kyle Skipworth up at the plate with two outs, Colome threw a wild pitch that scored Lasater to tie the game. After a lengthy at-bat, Skipworth drew a walk and was brought home on an RBI triple by Ryan Curry that gave Jacksonville a 3-2 lead.
After tossing scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth, Evans walked the first two batters he faced in the seventh. Reliever Zach Simons took over and struck out the first two batters before David Wendt reached on an error to load the bases. With a full count, Simons forced Shawn O'Malley to fly out to left to end the inning.
Simons would also work threw a jam in the top of the eighth inning, sending the Suns to the bottom of the frame still nursing a 3-2 lead. Jacksonville scored three runs off Biscuit reliever Neil Schenk in the bottom of the frame, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Skipworth and back-to-back RBI singles by Chris Gutierrez and Curry to put the score at 6-2. Chris Hatcher worked a perfect ninth to preserve the Suns victory.
The Suns and Biscuits will play the final game of the five game series on Thursday night at the Baseball Grounds. Thursday's game will feature "Thursday Night Throwdown," with Suns fans having the opportunity to purchase Budweiser beer for a dollar as well as cocktail specials.
