
Barons Succumb to Smokies, 5-4

Hoover, AL - Blake Lalli went 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI as the Birmingham Barons (15-24, 55-54) succumbed to the Tennessee Smokies (20-19, 63-46), 5-4, in front of 2,721 fans Wednesday night at Tennessee's Smokies Park.
Birmingham hopped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Brandon Short drove a double to center field and raced home on a RBI single by Jon Gilmore.
The Smokies knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning after James Adduci smacked a leadoff triple to left field and scored on Jae-Hoon Ha's RBI single to center field.
Jake Oester collected a leadoff single in the top of the second inning and dashed to third base on Luis Sierra's double to center field. Following Ross Wilson's groundout that delivered Oester, a RBI single by Short scored Sierra as the Barons snatched a two-run lead, 3-1.
Tennessee captured a 4-3 advantage in the third inning when Junior Lake looped a soft fly single into left field, stole second base and was knocked in on Ha's RBI Double. After Ty Wright was hit by a pitch, Lalli singled that scored Lake while Wright dashed to third base on the play. Wright would then steal home for the Smokies third run of the inning.
The Barons tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning after three-straight walks to Sierra, Wilson and Alden Carrithers began the frame. With the bases loaded, a double play by Short plated Sierra for the game-tying run.
Lalli lined a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth inning and scampered into third base on a groundout. Nelson Perez smacked a RBI single to center field that knocked Lalli home for the eventual game-winning run, 5-4.
Nathan Jones (1-3) suffered the defeat for the Barons as the reliever was charged with one earned run on two hits and one walk in 1.0 IP. Terry Doyle
Reliever Rafael Dolis (7-5) hurled 2.0 hiltess IP with one strikeout en route to the victory in relief. Austin Bibens-Dirkx received a no-decision after the right-hander tossed 5.0 IP with three earned runs on 8 hits, 3 walks and 2 strikeouts.
Nathan Jones (1-3) suffered the defeat for the Barons as the reliever was charged with one earned run on two hits and one walk in 1.0 IP. Terry Doyle yielded four earned runs on nine hits and one walk in 7.0 IP for the no-decision.
The Barons and Smokies play the finale of the five-game set at Tennessee's Smokies Park, with first pitch set for Thursday night at 6:15 p.m. (CDT). Birmingham will send left-hander Justin Edwards (3-5, 4.72) while Tennessee turns to left-handed pitcher Brooks Raley (6-8, 4.24).
