June 9, 2006 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
Jacksonville, Fla. - After trailing 2-0 in the second inning, Jacksonville used solo homeruns from Tony Abreu and Tydus Meadows to tie the game in the sixth inning while scoring two improbable runs in the seventh to overtake the Huntsville Stars for the second consecutive night with a 4-2 victory.
The first half South Division Champion Jacksonville Suns have won 10 straight games and 18 of the last 19 to improve to a record of 43-20. The winning streak is the best in the Southern League this season and is two short of the best streak in the Suns history (records only back to 1988) as the Suns won 12 straight at one point in 2005.
Huntsville jumped on Jacksonville starter Heath Totten in the first inning as Brad Nelson recorded an RBI single to open a 1-0 lead. The Stars' Jeff Eure started the second inning with a solo homerun, his fourth homerun of the season, to increase the lead to 2-0.
Totten then settled in by sitting down 13 in a row at one point while allowing only one hit in his final five innings of work. The Texan pitched seven innings allowing two runs on five total hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Jacksonville's offense finally got to Huntsville starter Travis Phelps in the sixth inning as Tony Abreu and Tydus Meadows hit solo homeruns in the inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Suns took the lead in the seventh on an improbable play as with two outs and a man at first base, Chin-Lung Hu hit a high fly ball to center that appeared to be a routine final out. At the last moments of the ball's flight Huntsville centerfielder Steve Moss lost sight of the ball, and as it dropped Craig Brazell came around to score on what was ruled an RBI double. Later in the inning, Tydus Meadows walked with the bases loaded to open the lead to 4-2.
Heath Totten improved to 5-2 with the victory while Travis Phelps fell to 1-3 in the loss. Mark Alexander saved his 14th game of the season.
The Suns and Stars get together in game four on Saturday night at 7:05 ET. RHP Carlos Villanueva will pitch for Huntsville against Jacksonville's Joel Hanrahan. The first 3,000 fans will receive a Suns camouflage cap while the Suns will wear camouflage jerseys in celebration of the U.S. Army's 231st birthday. Tickets are available by calling the Suns box office at 904.358.2846 or visiting jaxsuns.com.
