
Carolina defeats Montgmery

Zebulon, NC --- Paul Mildren worked seven shutout innings to lead Carolina past Montgomery 8-1 at Five County Stadium before 4,867 fans on Friday night.
Mildren (W, 4-5), who earned his first win in five starts, fanned nine without issuing a walk, and overtook the Southern League lead in strikeouts with 79.
Carolina (29-34) scored in every inning but the fourth and eighth. Ryan Bear and Lee Mitchell hit early homers against the league leader in wins, Jim Magrane (L, 7-5). Of Carolina's nine hits, six were extra base hits. Angel Molina went 2-3, scoring twice and driving in one, while JC Muniz was 2-4 with an RBI-double. Bear's first inning homer was a solo blast to left, while Mitchell hit a two-run shot in the third after a walk to Edgar Gonzalez.
Kevin Cave permitted a solo homer to Jeremy Owens in the eighth, while Matt Yourkin fanned two during a perfect ninth inning to cap the win.
The Mudcats lead the series with Montgomery (32-30) 2-1 with Jose Garcia (0-0, 0.00) making his Double-A debut on Saturday night against Chris Flinn (1-5, 5.37) at 7:15 PM ET.
