Suns Squeak Past Legends in Final Seconds

January 20, 2019 - NBA G League (G League) - Texas Legends News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - Justin Dentmon and Wade Baldwin IV combined for 52 points for the Texas Legends (9-20) Saturday night but the Northern Arizona Suns (6-24) got the last word 117-116.

Xavier Johnson grabbed the first points of the game for Texas, but the early lead quickly slipped away. Midway through the quarter the Suns built a double-digit advantage and held off the Legends' late rally attempts to keep a 34-28 edge going into the second. Northern Arizona built up their largest lead of the night (+12) in the second but Texas' Ray Spalding went 2-of-2 outside and powered out 10 total to bring Texas within seven at the half.

After shooting 52% in the first half, Texas cooled down in the third but found themselves at the free throw line 20 times to edge the home team 29-25. With just over three minutes in the third, the Legends used 10 unanswered points helped by back-to-back threes from Justin Dentmon and Donte Ingram to regain the lead. The two exchanged leads three more times before the buzzer with the Suns on top 89-86 heading into the final minutes.

Northern Arizona held tight to their lead in the fourth, but Texas' outside shooting kept it close. Hitting 6-of-9 long balls, the Legends tied it up twice before jumping ahead with 1:17 on the clock. The Suns answered with a triple of their own and the two exchanged baskets (and leads) through the final seconds with Northern Arizona getting the last basket to grab their third straight victory.

Dentmon led the Legends' scoring with 27 off the bench, knocking down 6-of-11 outside. Baldwin and Ray Spalding filled the stat lines with Baldwin adding 25 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals and Spalding finishing at 23 points, a season-high 17 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks. Xavier Johnson added his second double-double of the season with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and Xavier Rathan-Mayes rounded out the double-digit efforts with 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Northern Arizona had seven players with ten or more led by Peter Jok with 24 points, 5 rebounds. George King and Hollis Thompson led the Suns' boards with 7 each, adding 11 and 14 points respectively. Daxter Miles Jr. came off the bench for 17 points, 4 assists, and Retin Obasohan tallied 10 points and a team-high 7 assists.
