Suns Shut Down Power 3-1

In front of a sellout crowd of over 5,800 people, the Hagerstown Suns (18-16) defeated the West Virginia Power (14-20) 3-1 on Friday night at Municipal Stadium.

The game started as a pitcher's duel between Suns starter Jack McGeary (3-1) and Power pitcher Melkin Laureano (2-3), with the game being scoreless through the first four0and-a-half innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Suns reached the scoreboard first. With second and third with one away, Sandy Leon grounded out to short to score J.P. Ramirez. The next batter, Eury Perez grounded a single up the middle to score J.R. Higley from third for a 2-0 Suns lead.

The next inning, the Suns connected for another run. With two outs, Justin Bloxom doubled to the left corner. Destin Hood followed with a double to deep center to score Bloxom for the 3-0 advantage.

Rob Wort threw two scoreless for the Suns in relief of McGeary, keeping the game at 3-0 into the top of the eighth.

The Power got on the board in the eighth, connecting with a Ramon Cabrera single with runners on the corners with one out, bringing Jarek Cunningham home to cut the score to 3-1. Dean Weaver got the next two outs, and the Suns held on for the victory after a scoreless ninth.

McGeary earned his third win with five scoreless innings pitched, striking out eight batters. Weaver earned his sixth save of the season after pitching the final two innings, allowing one run.

Laureano got the loss after pitching five innings, allowing two runs and striking out three.

With 5,822 people in attendance, Hagerstown had its largest crowd of the season and third sellout of the year.

Hagerstown leads West Virginia in the series 2-1 and will play the final contest of the set on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. Gates to Municipal Stadium open at 5:35 p.m.
