Tonight: The first-place Gnats play game three of a four-game series against the Rome Braves. The Gnats lead Augusta, their next opponent, by three games for first place in the SAL Southern Division. Savannah has won three games in a row and four of their last five games.
Last Night: Savannah cruised to a 6-2 win behind seven strong innings from Brandon Moore who gave up just one run, in the seventh inning, on five hits and a walk, while fanning six. SS Wilmer Flores gave Savannah a 2-0 lead with a two-run double in the third inning. The Gnats chased Rome starter Arodys Vizcaino with a three run top of the fifth.
Now Pitching: Jimmy Fuller will make his seventh start as a Gnat. The Gnats are 5-1 when Fuller starts and have supported him with 5.0 runs per game, while the Gnats have averaged 5.09 runs per game. Fuller gave up just three unearned runs in his last start, in a second inning in which the Gnats committed three errors behind him. He finished five innings with seven strikeouts and a season-high four walks in the Gnats 11-7 win in Lakewood. He is currently fifth in the SAL with a 1.63 ERA. twelth in innings pitched (33.2) and tenth in WHIP (0.98). Fuller spent all of 2009 with the Brooklyn Cyclones where he was a NYP League All-Star in a season in which he was 3-6 with a 2.86 ERA in 12 games, 11 of which were starts. Fuller struck out 67 batters and walked fifteen for a sterling K/BB ratio of 4.67. Fuller was a DII All-American in 2008 at Southern Connecticut State University where he led DII in strikeouts with 145, averaging 13 whiffs per nine innings. He was 9-3 with a 1.39 ERA and put together a streak of 59 scoreless innings.
Vs. Rome: The Gnats are 5-1 against Rome, 2-0 at home and 3-1 on the road. The Gnats and the Braves are scheduled for 23 games this year. Gnats pitching owns a 1.67 ERA in six games against Rome and has held the Braves to 11 runs with 48 strikeouts against 12 walks. Gnats pitching has held Rome's batters to a .215/.283/.265 (AVG/OBP/SLG) line. Last year, the Gnats and Braves split their season series 11-11.
Big Flo: Wilmer Flores has hit safely in seven straight games and is third in the league in batting average (.343), tied for second in slugging percentage (.577), tied for the lead in extra base hits (20) with Kannapolis's Ian Gac, first in total bases (79) and tied for third with 13 doubles.
Roster Update: The Gnats activated Rafael Fernandez from the disabled list today and sent 1B Jeff Flagg down to extended spring training.
Highwater: The Gnats are ten games over .500 for the first time this year at 22-12.
Pitching In: Savannah leads the SAL with a 2.60 ERA. Gnats pitching has allowed 115 runs overall, 16 fewer than Hickory, and Charleston which have been the second-stingiest staff overall. Rome has the second-lowest ERA in the SAL at 2.96, but has allowed 37 unearned runs, the second-highest mark in the league behind Lakewood's 40.
