Suns Shut Down BlueClaws 4-2

With a four-run fourth inning, the Hagerstown Suns defeated the Lakewood BlueClaws 4-2 on Thursday night to split the four-game series.

Lakewood scored first in the second inning with catcher Kyle Lafrenz hitting an RBI single off Trevor Holder to score Darin Ruf to go up 1-0.

The BlueClaws struck again in the fourth inning with a two-out RBI double by Alan Schoenberger to score Stephen Batts to go up 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Hagerstown got the bats going. Steven Souza began the inning with a double off Matthew Way (0-2). The next batter, Justin Bloxom grounded to short, but on a throwing error to third, Souza scored and Bloxom advanced to second. Destin Hood hit a double to center to score Bloxom to tie the game.

After Adrian Nieto singled to put the runners on the corners, right fielder Marcus Jones hit a ground ball double down the left field line to score Hood and Nieto, putting the Suns up 4-2.

The Hagerstown pitching staff did not allow a hit in the final four innings as they held on for the win 4-2.

Holder did not get a decision after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing two runs with five strikeouts. Glenn Gibson (1-0) picked up the win for the Suns, coming in relief for Holder and pitching two scoreless innings. Patrick Arnold came in relief in the seventh to pitch 1 2/3 scoreless, and Dean Weaver earned his first save, holding the two-run lead in the through the ninth inning.

Way gets the loss for Lakewood after pitching five innings with four runs allowed and seven strikeouts. Chad Poe pitched three hitless innings of relief with four strikeouts.

The Suns improve to 3-5 and will hit the road to face their in-state rival, the Delmarva Shorebirds, for a four-game series starting on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The BlueClaws fall to 4-4 and will return home to face the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

The next Suns home game will be on April 24th when the Shorebirds come to Hagerstown. The game will start at 6:35 p.m.
