Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Savannah, GA - For the second time this season the Augusta GreenJackets lost with a sweep on the line, this time by a 4-1 margin over the Savannah Sand Gnats. Despite the loss, the Jackets still took three of four from both Greensboro and Savannah and six of their season-opening eight-game road trip.
The GreenJackets outhit Savannah 6-5 in the loss, but the Gnats found creative ways to manufacture runs early and often. In the first inning a walk and single led to a sacrifice fly and the game's first run as Savannah led 1-0. After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second, Cesar Puello's single was misplayed by right fielder Jose Medina to allow Dock Doyle to score from first and send Puello to third. Puello later scored from third on a groundout to put Savannah up three runs.
Mark Cohoon (1-0) cruised through six innings, giving up just one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Augusta scored their lone run off Cohoon on a two-out triple to right in the fifth off the bat of Evan Crawford. The Gnats got that run back on Wilmer Flores' RBI single in the bottom half of that inning to push the lead back to three runs.
Cohoon was followed by John Church, Eric Turgeon and Brandon Sage - a trio that mowed the Jackets down over the final three innings. Augusta was held without a run and to just two hits in the last three innings. Sage earned his first save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Jorge Bucardo (0-1) fired five innings and allowed four runs, three earned, for Augusta in the loss. He yielded just three hits and three walks while striking out four. Brian Irving tossed three shutout innings of relief to keep the Jackets in the game late.
The GreenJackets will open the home portion of their 2010 season at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Friday night with BJ Salsbury (1-0, 0.00) on the hill against Charleston's Jose Ramirez (0-0, 3.60) as Augusta opens an eight-game homestand with the RiverDogs and then the Sand Gnats. First pitch will come at a special 7:35 p.m. start time with the pregame action beginning at 7:20 p.m. on WRDW-AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
Single-game and Season Tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
