Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md.- All year long Hagerstown has been competitive because of their bats, but their lack of effective pitching has prevented the Suns from being a consistent contender. After Friday night's 8-3 triumph of Delmarva, in which the Suns received another quality outing from a starter, Hagerstown propelled themselves to 2-0 in the new season and held the Birds at bay for the second straight evening.
Cole Kimball followed in Colton Willem's footsteps for the Suns, allowing just two runs in five and a third innings and picking up his second win of the season. The Hagerstown bullpen then finished the deal with three and two-thirds solid frames, allowing just two hits and one run.
The Shorebirds fell behind early as starter Zach Britton struggled with his control throughout his outing. Hagerstown scored three runs off Britton in four innings, and although only one of the tallies was earned, Britton walked a season-high five batters and suffered his fifth defeat of the season.
While the Shorebirds got on the board in the fourth on Joe Mahoney's two-out RBI single that plated Joe Nowicki, the Suns would break the game open in the fifth and the sixth. Tim Pahuta's RBI double gave Hagerstown their three run lead back in the fifth, and an inning later, Aaron Seuss pounded his tenth homer of the season, a three-run blast that clanged off the scoreboard over the secondary wall in deep left field. Seuss' bomb came off reliever Aubrey Miller, who was tagged for five runs on seven hits in his three innings on the hill.
For the second straight night, Mahoney was the only Shorebird with more than one hit. The Delmarva DH was 2-4, but for the rest of the offense was fairly quiet.
Hagerstown has outscored Delmarva 15-4 in the first two games of the four game series, which continues Saturday evening at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
