Hagerstown Suns News Release
SALISBURY, MD - For the second consecutive game the Hagerstown Suns (2-0) got excellent pitching in a victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds (0-2) to take an 8-3 victory at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday, June 20.
Where Colton Willems was brilliant on Thursday, it was Cole Kimball who dominated the Shorebirds lineup on Friday. Kimball struck out eight batters in five and one third innings of work and allowed just two walks and two runs.
The scoring started early for Hagerstown, as DH Boomer Whiting led off the first inning with a walk and later scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by left fielder Aaron Seuss. The Hagerstown lead was extended to 3-0 in the top of the second as Whiting and second baseman Valerio Heredia scored on an error by Delmarva second baseman Ryan Adams. Adams had two errors in the game, and leads the South Atlantic League with 34 on the season.
After Delmarva battled back with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning off Kimball, the Suns put the game out of reach with a run in the fifth inning, three in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
Suns catcher Travis Reagan scored the lone run in the fifth for Hagerstown as he scored from first base on a double by first baseman Tim Pahuta to make the score 4-1.
The big hit in the game came in the top of the sixth as Whiting and shortstop Dan Lyons reached and were driven home on a three-run home run to left field by Seuss. Seuss, who also doubled in the game, now has ten home runs on the season.
Third baseman Stephen King doubled home Lyons for the final run of the game in the eighth inning after the Shorebirds tacked two of their own on in the bottom of the sixth.
Dan Leatherman and Chris Lugo combined to finish the game in relief of Kimball. Leatherman pitched two innings, allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out one shorebird, but Lugo did one better. The right hander did not allow a base runner in his two innings of work and struck out two, including a game ending strikeout of Delmarva shortstop Pedro Florimon. Florimon ended the day 0-4 with four strikeouts.
The Suns started the first half of the season with back-to-back victories at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury as well. Hagerstown then proceeded to lose three of their next four games, falling behind the eventual North Division champion Lake County Captains.
The Suns and Shorebirds will continue their four game series on Saturday, June 21st at 7:05 p.m.
