Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets (41-28, 1-1) lost a pitchers duel to the Asheville Tourists (46-24, 1-1) on Friday night, 1-0. Ryan Paul suffered the loss in relief and Augusta was shutout for the seventh time this season.

Asheville broke a scoreless tie in the eighth inning on a two-out RBI single from Helder Velazquez off of Paul.

Paul (0-1) walked two in the eighth inning before allowing the two-out single to Velazquez. Paul worked two innings and struck out three in the loss.

Both teams loaded the bases in their half of the seventh inning but neither team could plate a run and the game remained scoreless. Augusta reliever David Mixon entered the game in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out and struck out two batters to end the half inning.

The GreenJackets were able to get the tying run on base in the ninth inning when Jackson Williams led off the frame with a walk. James Simmons was inserted as a pinch runner and moved up to second on fielding error from first baseman Jeffery Cunningham when he missed the ball on a pickoff attempt.

Augusta starter Daryl Maday recorded the no-decision allowing two hits over six shutout innings. Maday walked four and struck out seven, one strikeout short of matching his career high.

The GreenJackets and Tourists continue their five game series Saturday night with Augusta sending southpaw Madison Bumgarner (6-2, 1.96) to the mound. Asheville counters with right-hander Bruce Billings (4-4, 4.24). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
