Lexington Legends News Release
Different day, same result for the Lexington Legends. Lexington dropped its fifth game in a row and eighth consecutive game against Greensboro. Lexington jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, but only scored two runs during the rest of the game in route to an 11-5 loss.
The Legends started the scoring in the first inning. Cat Everett and Eric Taylor walked in front of Brian Pellegrini who launched his second home run in as many at-bats. The Legends scored first for the 29th game this season. Lexington is 14-15 in those games.
Ryan Antesberger plated the Grasshoppers' first run with a home run to left in the first inning. The Legends scored again in the third inning when Pellegrini drove in his fourth run of the game on a triple to right. Eric Taylor, who had singled, scored on the play.
Greensboro broke through with four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead from Lexington. Torre Langley doubled and Thomas Hickman homered to score the first two runs of the inning. A single from Osvaldo Martinez, triple from Ryan Curry and sacrifice fly from Bryan Petersen plated the final two runs of the inning.
The Grasshoppers added three more runs in the seventh inning on consecutive doubles from Petersen, Michael Stanton and Matt Dominguez. Steve Brown threw Matt Dominguez out at home to end the inning and prevent Greensboro from scoring any more runs.
Four more runs from Greensboro in the eighth inning put the game out of reach. Martinez and Curry started the inning with consecutive singles before Daniel Garcia advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt. Petersen drove both men home with a single and scored when Stanton launched his 17th home run of the season to left.
Lexington starting pitcher Tommy Vessella lost for the fourth consecutive start and the third time in three games against Greensboro this season. Vessella pitched three and one-third innings, allowed five runs on six hits, two walks and one strikeout.
Brandon Barnes recorded a hit in his tenth consecutive game, tying Matthew Cusick's team high hitting streak in 2008. Eric Taylor was 3-3 in the game and Cat Everett added two hits in three at-bats. The two teams will meet Saturday night in game three of the five-game set.
