Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (16-18) scored four runs in the first three innings on Friday night to take a three-run advantage over the West Virginia Power (19-15), and the Suns were able to make that lead hold up for an eventual 5-2 win. The season series between the Suns and Power is now even at four wins apiece.
Hagerstown's first two runs came in the first inning. Trailing 1-0 at the time, the Suns got a two-out rally started with a ground ball single to left by catcher Raudy Read. First baseman Jose Marmolejos then drew a walk, and DH Grant DeBruin followed with a single to right to load the bases. That's when LF Jeff Gardner delivered with a line drive double to left, driving in two to make it 2-1.
In the second the Suns tacked on another run thanks to a solo shot off the bat of 2B Osvaldo Abreu. It was Abreu's first homerun of the season and just the second of his professional career. It was the first homer the Suns had hit since Marmolejos went yard back on May 7 at Rome.
Hagerstown's lead increased to 4-1 in the third. Again it was Gardner who delivered with an RBI base hit. He came to the plate with runners on the corners and none out, and stroked a line drive to right, which wound up chasing starting RHP Alex McRae (2-3) from the game. McRae suffered the loss as he gave up four earned runs on seven hits and two walks in two plus innings of work.
The Suns lead got as large as four runs in the seventh when Abreu trotted home on a missed catch error by West Virginia 1B Connor Joe. The final score was set in the ninth when LF Elvis Escobar drove in 3B Chase Simpson with a double to left field. West Virginia wound up out-hitting Hagerstown in the game 10-7.
RHP Austen Williams (5-1) got the start and win for Hagerstown. He threw six innings, surrendering one earned run on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. RHP Drew Van Orden tossed the final three innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk to earn his first save of the season in his first relief appearance of the year.
These teams will continue their five-game series at Municipal Stadium on Saturday May 16. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. For ticket call 301-791-6266 or go to www.hagerstownsuns.com.
