Hickory Crawdads News Release
Augusta, GA - One night after the Hickory Crawdads pitching staff carried the club to a win the 'Dads offense took control Friday night, as the Hickory hitters came through with five, 2-out RBIs to lift the team to a 7-2 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The Crawdads fell behind 2-0 after the first two innings, but followed that with seven unanswered tallies en route to the win. All seven of the 'Dads runs came in a four inning stretch, with the club scoring once in the 4th and 5th, three times in the 6th, and two final tallies in the 7th. The first five runs of the game for Hickory all came on 2-out RBIs, as Travis Demeritte, Michael De Leon, Jairo Beras, and Marcus Greene all came through with clutch hits.
Demeritte led the offensive charge finishing with a perfect 3-3 game including a double, RBI, run scored, stolen base, and a walk. De Leon also ended the night with a multi-hit game going 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Greene went 1-3 with his second homer of the year, two RBIs and two runs scored.
The 'Dads entered the top of the 4th trailing Augusta 2-0 after the GreenJackets got to Hickory starter Reed Garrett for a run in both the 1st and 2nd innings. Following two quick outs recorded by 'Jackets starter Sam Coonrod, Tripp Martin lined a double to left field and came in one batter later when Demeritte singled through the left side to cut the score to 2-1. Hickory tied up the game at 2-2 in the next inning, as Greene walked to begin the frame before coming home on a 2-out, RBI single to center by De Leon.
The Crawdads finally took the lead with a 3-run 6th inning. Demeritte started the rally with a 2-out single to left, before he moved up on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI base knock by Beras. Greene followed and promptly gave the 'Dads some breathing room with a line drive long ball to left-center field for a 5-2 Hickory advantage. The Crawdads capped the scoring in the 7th when the club finally brought home a run before two outs, with a one-out RBI triple by Luke Tendler and an RBI single from Jose Trevino giving the 'Dads the final 7-2 score they would win by.
Garrett (3-2) earned the win for Hickory, as the right-handed hurler settled down after the first two frames and finished the night with two runs allowed on four hits, two walks, and five strikeouts over 6.1 IP. Augusta reliever Ramon Del Orbe (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits during his two innings out of the bullpen.
The Crawdads (24-9) have now won the first two games of their series against the GreenJackets (17-16) and seven of their last eight games overall. The 'Dads and 'Jackets will match up again in game three of the series Saturday night at 7:05 pm.
