
Strong Start and Slow Finish For Augusta

AUGUSTA, GA: In front of a packed Lake Olmstead Stadium crowd the Augusta GreenJackets (17-16) squared off the Hickory Crawdads (24-9) in game two of a four game weekend series. Sam Coonrod (0-1 ERA 4.50) matched up against Reed Garrett (3-2 3.56) in a pitching duel featuring two right-handed pitchers. When the dust had settled on the field of Lake Olmstead Stadium the Hickory Crawdads walked away with a victory from Friday night's contest with a score of seven to two.
The GreenJackets struck early in the bottom of the first inning. When Left fielder Will Callaway recorded his tenth RBI of the season on a ground out to second base that allowed lead off man Seth Harrison to score. Harrison led of the game with a triple (his third triple of the year). The GreenJackets were able to extend their lead to two to zero in the second inning with a wild pitch by Crawdads pitcher Garrett Reed allowing John Riley to score for third base.
Unforutnelty it was not long until the Crawdads bats came alive in a big way. In the top of the fourth inning a single by second baseman Travis Dermeritte allowed Trippp Martin to score the Crawdads first run of the game. With a score of two to one the Crawdads struck again in the top of the fifth. This time Michael De Leon singled to center and knocked in designed hitter Marcus Green Jr. to tie the game at two a piece.
In the top of the sixth inning GreenJackets manager Nestor Rojas went to his bullpen to RHP Ramon Del Obre. Thus, ending Sam Coonrod's night. Coonrod left the game after pitching five innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, and striking out five. In the record books Coonrod will have a no decision beside his name for his efforts on Friday night.
During the top of the sixth inning after a Jairo Beras RBI single to take a three to two lead. Marcus Green Jr. smacked a two run home run over the left center field wall to give the Crawdads some breathing room with a score of five to two. In the top of the seventh inning the Crawdads would tack on two more runs to jump out to a seven to two lead. The Crawdads' lead and bullpen was strong enough to hold off any attempt of a comeback by the GreenJackets on the night.
The final line of Friday night's game will read two runs, eight hits, and two errors for the Augusta GreenJackets (17-16) and seven runs, eleven hits, and one error for the Hickory Crawdads (24-9). Garret Reed will take home his third victory of the season and Ramon Del Orbe receives his first loss.
Saturday, May 15th game three contest between the Hickory Crawdads and the Augusta GreenJackets will have a scheduled first pitch time of 7:05pm with gates of Lake Olmstead Stadium opening at 6:00pm to guests. Tomorrow night's probable pitching match up includes LHP Nick Gonzalez (1-1 ERA 5.73) for the GreenJackets and Brett Martin (2-0 ERA 2.59) for the visiting Crawdads.
Tomorrow Saturday night's promotions include an appearance by former Major League Baseball pitcher and Georgia native John Rocker. Rocker, who spent six years in Major League Baseball, spent four seasons with the Atlanta Braves. Rocker also pitched in two National League Champions Series and one World Series. John Rocker will be signing autographs to guests at Lake Olmstead Stadium during Saturday's Contest against the Hickory Crawdads. For the final time for the 2015 season the GreenJackets will welcome the students of Auggie's Reading Program! Students who have completed their goals set by their teachers in Auggie's Reading Program will be able to gain free admission into Lake Olmstead Stadium. Post-game entertainment will include Launch-A-Ball and Kids Run the Bases.
