Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Suns had a solid pitching day but got shutout by the Greensboro Grasshoppers 1-0 on Friday night.

The game started as a pitching duel between two former teammates at UC Riverside as Suns southpaw Paul Applebee (2-4) took the hill against Greensboro starter Matt Montgomery (9-8).

Hagerstown had a runner on third with two outs in each of the first two innings, but could not score after both frames ended on ground outs.

Greensboro broke the scoreless tie in the third with a solo home run by Taylor Krick to make it 1-0.

The Grasshoppers threatened in the fifth with second and third with one away. Ben Graham came in relief of Applebee, struck out Jose Duarte for the second out. Michael Pasak hit a ball down the third base line, but a diving stop by Stephen King and subsequent throw to first ended the inning with no damage.

The Suns had their best chance to get the tying run in the eighth inning after Destin Hood singled and reached third on a wild pitch and a ground out by Marcus Jones advanced him to third. The Grasshoppers brought in Alejanaro Ramos, who struck out Brett Newsome to end the inning.

Applebee pitched four-and-a-third, allowing just one run with a strikeout in his start. Graham went 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, followed by Dean Weaver's two scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth.

Montgomery got the win with six scoreless innings thrown in his start. Ramos got his 23rd save with 1.1 innings of relief to end the game.

The Suns and Grasshoppers will play the third of the four-game set on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at NewBridge Bank Park.
