Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets handed the Savannah Sand Gnats their worst defeat of the 2010 season with a 15-2 drubbing Friday night at Savannah's Historic Grayson Stadium. In the loss, RF Cesar Puello was 1-for-2 with a triple, his first of the year, to extend his hitting streak to a personal-best nine straight games. He's now hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games for Savannah (13-21/55-49).
The 15 runs Gnats' pitching allowed were the most in 2010, surpassing the 13 runs the team allowed on Tuesday night in Lexington. The 13 run margin of defeat was the worst of the year for Savannah as well.
The GreenJackets (18-15/59-44) blew the game open early with seven runs in the top of the first inning against starter Collin McHugh. Catcher Tommy Joseph blasted a two-run home run in the second that made the score 9-0. McHugh became the first Savannah pitcher to give up nine runs in a game this year.
Puello had a hand in both Savannah runs. In the third, he brought home C Dock Doyle, who had singled, with an RBI groundout. In the sixth, he tripled, and after 3B Jet Butler walked, came home on a double-steal when Butler swiped second. It was the second time that Puello has stolen home on a double steal this year. On April 29th, he took home when 2B Alonzo Harris nabbed second.
Savannah has lost three games in a row and nine of their last 12 contests.
The Gnats send RHP Armando Rodriguez (5-6, 3.39) to the hill in game three of their four-game series to take on RHP Brian Irving (6-3, 4.52) on Saturday evening with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
