Cesar Puello, who was 2-3, had two of Savannah's five hits. Reliever Gabriel Zavala gave up just one hit over three innings of relief with six strikeouts. .
Now Pitching: Collin McHugh will make his 13th start of the year. McHugh gave up three runs on seven hits in six innings in his last start in West Virginia. He walked a season-high four batters and struck out a season-high 11. All three runs McHugh allowed came in the first inning, but he settled in after that in a game Savannah won 6-3 in 10 innings. The Gnats are 3-9 when McHugh starts and have supported him with 3.00 runs per game, the lowest of any Gnat pitcher. McHugh was 13-9 with five saves in his career at Berry (GA) College and led the Southern States Athletic Conference in strikeout rate (9.05 K/9) in his junior year in 2008. The Mets drafted McHugh in the 18th round in 2008.
Vs. Augusta: Savannah is 6-11 against Augusta this year, 1-4 at home and 5-7 on the road. The Gnats are 24-40 against Augusta since becoming a Mets affiliate prior to the 2007 season.
Puello Power: After a 2-3 game last night, Cesar Puello has hit safely in eight straight and 16 of his last 17 games. He's hitting .347/.439/.439 (AVG/OBP/SLG) in 26 games in July. His .439 OBP in July is second in the league in that time behind Chris McGuiness (.477) of Greenville. Puello has raised his batting average 22 points in his last 17 games. Home Cooking? The Gnats are 5-10 at home in the second half, the worst home record in the league, after going 24-11 at home in the first half, the best home record of any team in the league.
Still at the Top: The Gnats lead the SAL in ERA (2.81), strikeouts (885) and innings pitched (954.1). At the end of the first half, the Gnats had a 2.52 ERA, so their team ERA has gone up by 0.29 in the last 33 games.
