
Suns Increase Division Lead with Seventh Consecutive Win

Jacksonville, Fla. - Mike Stanton and Logan Morrison belted back-to-back first inning homeruns lead ing the Jacksonville Suns (56-45, 21-10) to their seventh straight victory, a 4-3 win over the Birmingham Barons (67-33, 19-12) in front of 3,348 Monday afternoon at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Suns starter Nic Ungs (6-2) was charged with two runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out seven in the victory. Ungs struck out five consecutive hitters in the second and third innings. Barons starter Charlie Shirek (4-4) fell in the tough luck loss, allowing four runs and five of the six hits he allowed during the first inning. Suns closer Matt Peterson (25) saved the game with a hitless ninth inning.
Birmingham opened the scoring in the top of the first inning against Ungs. Jordan Danks singled before a C.J. Retherford double moved runners in scoring position with no outs. David Cook next hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Danks for a 1-0 Barons lead.
Jacksonville answered in the bottom of the first inning against Shirek. A Bryan Petersen infield single and a Lorenzo Scott double placed runners in scoring position with no outs. Mike Stanton next belted a homerun over the leftfield lawn for a 3-1 Suns lead. Logan Morrison then connected for an opposite field, solo homerun onto the leftfield lawn for a 4-1 score.
Birmingham cut into the lead in the fifth inning when Don Lucy scored on a Danks single, cutting the Suns lead to 4-2. The Barons scored their final run in the seventh inning against Suns reliever Chris Leroux as C.J. Retherford singled home Rob Hudson with two out for a 4-3 final.
