Zebulon, NC --- Steve Johnson and two Chattanooga relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Lookouts claimed the opener of a five-game series at Five County Stadium over the Carolina Mudcats 3-0 before 3,902 fans on Monday night.

Johnson (W, 1-1), who notched eight wins in 18 games with High-A Inland Empire, tossed six scoreless and fanned seven as the Lookouts (17-14) gained sole possession of the Northern Division lead for the first time all season, dropping last-place Carolina five games behind with 39 to play.

Lee Tabor (L, 1-2) permitted all of his damage in the first inning, surrendering four hits and one walk as the Lookouts took a 2-0 lead. Andrew Lambo singled home Adam Godwin with one out, then a bases loaded walk pushed across the second run.

The Mudcats' (12-19) best opportunity came in the eighth, when down 3-0 and facing Kendy Batista, Juan Francisco batted as the tying run with one out. However, Francisco grounded into a double play to close the inning. The Mudcats brought the tying run up again in the ninth inning twice, but Matt Sartor (S, 10) fanned pinch-hitter Jason Bour and retired Chris Denove on a one-hopper to second base to close the game.

Carson Kainer had two of Carolina's five hits, including a double.

The series continues Tuesday night with Matt Kinker (3-2, 3.23) starting against Jesus Castillo (6-7, 4,82) at 7:15 PM ET.
