JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (28-35) fell to the Tennessee Smokies (34-29) 4-1 Sunday afternoon from Bragan Field to set up a rubber match tomorrow night.
Jacob Turner (W, 1-1) in his second major-league rehab start for the Chicago Cubs twirled five scoreless innings surrendering two hits while walking one and striking out three. Trevor Williams (L, 3-7) got the nod for the Suns, and worked five and one-third frames allowing three runs (all earned) on four hits while walking four and fanning five batters.
The scoring would begin in the in the top of the fourth, when the Smokies Bijan Rademacher worked a two-out walk, to then steal second and get knocked in courtesy of Stephen Bruno's RBI single. Tennessee would lead 1-0 through four innings of play.
Tennessee added to their advantage in the top of the sixth after a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases for Rademacher's RBI fielder's choice ground ball. With the Smokies now leading 2-0, Bruno provided his second run-scoring knock of the contest to create a 3-0 tally.
In the first of the eighth frame, against Suns reliever Frankie Reed, Rademacher singled and Stephen Bruno walked to put two runners on for a Wes Darvill RBI single that manufactured a 4-0-scoreboard edge for the Smokies. Jacksonville bullpen arm Brian Ellington entered in the same inning in relief of Reed, to retire a pair of batters and leave the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the eighth Zack Cox got on base courtesy of a lead off single to then reach second and third on a pair of wild pitches from Tennessee reliever Corey Black. Cox was then driven home by Ryan Rieger's sacrifice fly to center to trim the Suns' deficit to 4-1.
The Suns and Smokies will square off in the series finale Monday night from Bragan Field with a first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. ET. The Suns will send out righty Scott Lyman (0-0, 10.80 ERA) while the Smokies will counter with right-hander Ryan Williams (1-0, 3.86 ERA).
