Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md. - The Hagerstown Suns capitalized on two miscues by the Delmarva Shorebirds (49-56, 14-21) in the tenth inning to take game three by a final of 8-6 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Saturday night. There were 16 combined walks in the three hour and 53-minute ballgame. The Shorebirds went 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position and stranded 16 runners.
In front 2-0 in the fifth inning, the Shorebirds added two more runs. Ty Kelly singled and Jeremy Nowak doubled Kelly to third to open the inning. Then, Garabez Rosa singled to give the Shorebirds a 3-0 lead. Adam Gaylord followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to increase the lead to 4-0.
Shorebirds starter Scott Copeland retired 11 consecutive batters between the second and beginning of the sixth inning until falling into trouble. Copeland walked three batters to load the bases for Brett Newsome, who lined a bases clearing triple to right-center field to trim the deficit to 4-3.
The Shorebirds responded by increasing the lead to 6-3 in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Michael Ohlman hit a chopper up the middle and the second baseman Adrian Sanchez stepped on second and threw wild to first, allowing Michael Mooney and Kelly to score.
The Suns added two runs in the seventh inning to slice the deficit back to one run. With a runner at second, Blake Kelso hit a triple to right-center field and came into score as well after the relay throw to third from Rosa ricocheted off his foot, while sliding into third, and into the dugout.
In the eighth, David Freitas drew a leadoff walk from D.J. Ferguson. Then, Kevin Keyes hit a one-hop double off the left field wall to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Two batters later, Justino Cuevas lifted a sacrifice fly to left-center field to tie the game at 6-6.
In the tenth inning, the Suns plated two unearned runs off Travis Strong. Cuevas was hit by a pitch and he reached second on a low pickoff throw to first. Then, on a flare single into right-center field by Mills Rogers, Jeremy Nowak came on and fired high to third and the ball flew into the Shorebirds dugout, granting Cuevas the plate. With Rogers at third, Wade Moore singled up the middle.
Dean Weaver earned the win by tossing scoreless eighth and ninth innings. Tyler Hanks pitched a flawless tenth inning to pick up the save. Travis Strong was saddled with the loss.
Kelly, Rosa and Gaylord each recorded two hits to lead the Shorebirds 11-hit attack.
Ashur Tolliver posted two more scoreless innings to increase his scoreless innings streak to ten over his last six appearances.
The Shorebirds are back in action on Sunday afternoon at 5:05 p.m. LHP Matt Bywater is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
