Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Asheville's Joshua Slaats flummoxed the Kannapolis offense over six innings as the Tourists topped the Intimidators, 5-1, on Saturday night in front of 3,648 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Slaats (7-1) improved to 5-0 in six starts in July including two wins over the Intimidators. He allowed one run on six hits with a walk while striking out seven batters. Taylor Reid, Kraig Sitton and Juan Perez each tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the Tourists.
Asheville jumped ahead with a four-run fourth. Dustin Garneau led off the frame with a home run (14). With men in scoring position, Rafael Ortega grounded a ball to first base that Dan Black fielded and threw home, but Asheville's Chandler Laurent slide under the tag of Miguel Gonzalez for a 3-1 lead. Helder Velazquez grounded a single that ramped off the mound and into centerfield to score two more runs.
After the Tourists struck in the top of the second inning, Kannapolis responded in the bottom of the frame. Miguel Gonzalez singled up the middle to score Dan Black, tying the game 1-1. Center fielder Rafael Ortega's throw beat Black to the plate, but the Intimidator's first baseman plowed into Asheville catcher Dustin Garneau to jar the ball loose.
Intimidators starting pitcher Spencer Arroyo (7-7) struggled in 3 and 2/3 innings on the mound, his shortest outing since April. The left-hander matched a season-high five runs allowed on eight hits while striking out two and walking two in the loss.
Nick McCully pitched in relief, retiring all seven batters he faced in 2 and 1/3 innings. Chase Cooney matched his season-best with three strikeouts over two relief innings, and Wes Whisler tossed a scoreless ninth inning for Kannapolis.
The Intimidators conclude this four-game home stand with the series finale against the Tourists on Sunday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium with first pitch at 5:05 p.m. RHP Jon Bachanov (0-1, 2.35 ERA) will make his first career start for the Intimidators against Asheville's LHP Tyler Matzek (0-2, 9.69 ERA).
