GreenJackets squeeze past Crawdads, 6-5

AUGUSTA, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets edged the 1st-Half Northern Division Champion Hickory Crawdads, 6-5, before 4,114 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Saturday night.

The Crawdads (61-42, 21-14) got out to a 5-2 lead through the first two innings. Hickory plated four runs before the game's first out was retired in the top of the first against RHP Taylor Rogers. SS Jurickson Profar and CF Jake Skole led off with consecutive singles, before C Tomas Telis belted an RBI double to plate Profar and make it 1-0. After 1B Andrew Clark drew a walk to load the bases, RF Josh Richmond brought in Skole with an RBI single. 3B Christian Villanueva capped the big first inning with a two-run single, stretching the lead to 4-0.

After Augusta (50-54, 19-15) got on the board with a two-run homer by 1B Josh Mazzola in the bottom of the first, the 'Dads struck again in the top of the second. LF Braxton Lane started the inning with a line drive comeback single that hit Rogers on the mound. RHP Justin Schumer took over for the GreenJackets, and Profar welcomed him to the game with a base hit, moving Lane to third. One out later, Telis skied a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Lane and putting Hickory in the 5-2 advantage.

The GreenJackets edged closer against starter RHP Cody Buckel with a sacrifice fly from 3B Raynor Campbell in the fourth, and then tied it with two tallies in the fifth. SS Bobby Haney led off with a single, before racing all the way in on an RBI triple from 2B Carlos Willoughby. Willoughby came in the final ninety feet on an RBI single from CF Chris Lofton, squaring the score at 5-5.

Augusta struck for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh against RHP Ben Rowen (L, 2-4). With one out, Rowen hit Willoughby to put a man on. After a wild pitch moved Willoughby to second, Lofton brought him in again with an RBI double, putting the GreenJackets in the 6-5 lead.

RHP Seth Rosin replaced LHP Mario Rodriguez (W, 4-5) on the mound and tossed a scoreless eighth, before RHP Brett Bochy (S, 2) closed the 6-5 win for Augusta with a scoreless ninth.
