GREENVILLE, S.C. - Xander Bogaerts smacked two home runs to lead the Greenville Drive over the Charleston RiverDogs, 4-3, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of a crowd of 5,538 fans at Fluor Field.
Greenville claimed its fifth straight victory to improve to 19-16 this half and 57-48 overall, while Charleston dropped its fifth in a row to fall to 15-20 and 41-64.
The RiverDogs wasted no time offensively against Drive starter Brandon Workman (3-6), staking claim to a 1-0 lead two batters into the game. Jose Toussen grounded a single through the originator, and cruised around to score when Greenville left fielder Brandon Jacobs made an errant throw back to the infield on Anderson Feliz's double.
Felix Sanchez jumpstarted the Drive once again to tie the game at 1 apiece in the bottom half of the first against Shane Greene (3-11). Sanchez reached on an infield single and then moved into scoring position with his 43rd stole base of the season. Christian Vazquez ushered him to the plate moments later with a two-out RBI single up the middle.
Greenville played long ball to surge in front in the fourth, as Xander Bogaerts launched his eighth home run of the year over the left field wall for a 2-1 Drive lead.
The fourth inning was it for Greene, who yielded the two runs on four hits and three walks, while fanning five batters.
Bogaerts went deep for the second time of the night off Charleston's Manny Barreda in the sixth inning, upping the Greenville advantage to 3-1 with a homer to left. Drew Hedman stepped to the dish next and cracked a single, before coming home to score on a Wilfred Pichardo RBI triple.
Workman was brilliant in allowing only the one run over 7.0 frames. The former University of Texas standout permitted only four hits and two walks, while notching five strikeouts.
Charleston made things interesting in the ninth, plating two runs against Greenville reliever Charle Rosario. Kelvin De Leon poked a two-out, two-run single to right to pull the RiverDogs within 4-3 and reach first base as the tying run. Rosario persevered to pick up his fourth save, though, by inducing a groundout from Mike Ferraro.
Charleston and Greenville square off in the third contest of their four-game series on Sunday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Jose A. Ramirez (5-4, 4.22 ERA) is slated to throw for the RiverDogs, against fellow righty Keith Couch (4-3, 3.09 ERA) of the Drive.
