Suns Cook Crawdads in Game Two, 3-2

Hickory, NC- The Hagerstown Suns (59-48, 19-18) overcame a heart breaking defeat in the series opener to cook the Hickory Crawdads (63-43, 23-15) on Tuesday night at L.P. Frans Stadium by a score of 3-2. The Suns are now (2-5) against Hickory in the 2011 campaign. After a slugfest last night, game two featured great pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense from the visiting Suns.

Hagerstown RHP A.J. Cole (3-6), the winning pitcher, gunned through 5.0 innings and allowed two earned runs on three walks and five hits, while fanning a pair.

The Suns leaped on the scoreboard first with one run in the 2nd stanza as C David Freitas reached on a throwing error by Crawdads 2B Odubel Herrera before SS Jason Martinson swept a single through the hole at shortstop putting runners on first and second base. Then, with two outs, 1B Sean Nicol, as part of a 3-for-4, two RBI night at the plate, blooped an RBI single into shallow right center field off the glove of Herrera to give the Suns a 1-0 lead.

Hickory scored their first run in the 3rd inning when SS Jurickson Profar pulled an RBI single through the right side to score C Kellin Deglan, who singled to right field leading off the frame.

Hagerstown broke up the 1-1 tie in the 4th inning on an RBI triple ripped to the right field corner by Nicol, after LF Wade Moore stung a single up the left field line. Nicol was plated on an RBI sacrifice fly to deep center field off the lumber of CF Chris Curran.

Crawdads RHP Luke Jackson (4-3), the losing pitcher of record, gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks, amidst two strikeouts.

Hickory scored their second and final run in the 4th inning on an RBI single up the middle off the stick of CF Odubel Herrera, bringing home DH Tomas Telis, lead off with an opposite field single.

Hickory's bullpen tossed 4.0 scoreless innings, receiving work from RHP Ben Henry, RHP Jorge Barban, and RHP Francisco Mendoza. However, Hagerstown LHP Paul Applebee (1 SV) was stellar through 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and fanning one to earn his first save of the season.

The Suns continue their four-game road series with game three on Wednesday night. Wall-to-wall radio broadcast coverage will begin with a 6:45pm Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pre-game Show on the Suns radio flagship station, WJEJ 1240 AM before a 7:00pm first pitch. The starting pitching matchup will feature RHP Joe Van Meter (5-3, 2.98) against LHP Ryan Demmin (1-1, 2.87).

Applebee's lone strikeout ended the game as 3B Alejandro Selen, who crushed a three-run, game-tying home run in the bottom of the 9th inning last night, fanned swinging.
