Suns Rise for 3-2 Win Against Crawdads

HICKORY, NC - The Hagerstown Suns hung on for the 3-2 win against the Hickory Crawdads, 1st-Half Northern Division Champions, before 1,111 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Suns (58-49, 18-19) moved in front with an unearned run against RHP Luke Jackson (L, 4-3) in the top of the second. C David Freitas started the inning by reaching on a throwing error from 2B Odubel Herrera. One out later, Freitas moved to second on a single by SS Jason Martinson, before a two-out RBI base hit from 1B Sean Nicol brought Freitas home for the 1-0 lead.

The Crawdads (63-43, 23-15) came right back against RHP A.J. Cole (W, 3-6) in the bottom of the third. C Kellin Deglan led off with a single and moved to second when CF Braxton Lane walked one out later. SS Jurickson Profar tied it with an RBI single to right field, driving Deglan in from second base to make it 1-1.

Hagerstown responded quickly, moving back in front with two runs in the top of the fourth. With one away to start the inning, LF Wade Moore reached with a single and raced all the way home on an RBI triple from Nicol. Nicol quickly came home on a CF Chris Curran sacrifice fly, giving the Suns the 3-1 advantage.

Hickory chipped away in the bottom of the fourth inning. DH Tomas Telis started the stanza with a single, followed immediately by a walk from 1B Andrew Clark. After a pop out, Herrera ripped an RBI single up the middle to plate Telis and cut the deficit to 3-2.

Jackson dealt a scoreless fifth inning, and the trio of RHP Ben Henry, RHP Jorge Marban and RHP Francisco Mendoza kept the Suns from adding to the lead through the rest of the game. However, LHP Paul Applebee (S, 1) dealt four scoreless innings out of the Hagerstown bullpen to close the 3-2 win for the Suns.

The Crawdads take on the Suns on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at L.P. Frans Stadium (gates open at 6 p.m.).
