Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - Albert Cordero's two extra-base hits gave the Savannah Sand Gnats the lead in the middle innings before Savannah pulled away late for an 8-3 win over the Augusta GreenJackets at Historic Grayson Stadium Tuesday night. The Gnats (24-14/63-44) moved 3.5 games in front of Augusta for first place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division in the second half.
Cordero struck first in the third inning. Batting in a 2-2 game, he pounded a 1-0 offering over the leftfield wall for his fifth home run of the year to give Savannah a 3-2 lead. In the fifth inning, after SS Wilfredo Tovar and DH Blake Forsythe drew walks, Cordero doubled into the left field corner to drive home Tovar for a 4-2 Savannah advantage.
The Gnats pulled away from the GreenJackets with a four-run bottom of the eighth inning. Savannah loaded the bases with an infield hit and two walks and RF Rafael Fernandez unloaded them with a three-run double to deep left-center field. Forsythe then drove home Fernandez, who was 2-5 with two doubles, for the Gnats' eighth run.
Savannah took a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs against Augusta starter Gaspar Santiago in the second. The 'Jackets answered back with two runs against starter Yohan Almonte in the third to briefly even the game at 2-2. Almonte wobbled in the fourth, allowing runners to second and third before recording an out, but escaped unscathed to preserve the Gnats' lead. He finished six innings with six strikeouts for his fifth win of 2011.
Hamilton Bennett allowed a single run in the top of the ninth while recording his 10th save of the year.
The Gnats will send RHP Ryan Fraser (6-7, 3.59) to the mound in game three of the four-game series against RHP Shawn Sanford (8-6, 2.36) for Augusta. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and gates open at 6 pm. The pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 6:50 pm.
