Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (31-21, 65-54) won game one of a scheduled doubleheader against the Birmingham Barons (27-26, 71-52) by a score of 6-3, but had the nightcap suspended due to the Southern League curfew rules with the game still locked in a scoreless tie.

Game two will resume on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. ET, followed by the series finale between the Suns and Barons.

Game one featured a career-best performance from Suns left-hander Justin Nicolino, who struck out 13 batters, surpassing his previous high of nine achieved in 2011.

Nicolino registered the strikeouts in only six innings on the mound, striking out two batters in each of the first five frames before striking out the side in the sixth.

At the plate, the Suns rode a pair of three-run innings to the 6-3 victory. Derek Dietrich gave Jacksonville an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run double into the right-center field gap, and Danny Pertusati made it 3-0 several batters later with an RBI hit of his own.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mark Canha's two-run double made it 5-0 and J.T. Realmuto's sac fly completed the Suns' scoring in the opener of the twin bill.

Birmingham rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh before Pete Andrelczyk recorded the final out, earning his second save of the season.

Game two featured two more strong pitching performances, with both Jacksonville's Matt Neil and Birmingham's David Bassitt matching zeros over the first several frames. The game remained scoreless through the ninth inning, at which time the league curfew was called.
