Dietrich's Homer Gives Suns Win in Rain Shortened Finale

August 17, 2013 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons played and Jacksonville Suns played five and a half innings total on Saturday with the Barons taking two losses, including a 7-1 loss in Saturday's regularly scheduled game in front of 4,096 fans at The Baseball Grounds In Jacksonville.

The Barons would take a brief 1-0 lead in the game on a solo home run by Trayce Thompson, his 12th long ball of the season.

The lead would be short lived, however, as Derek Dietrich swatted a three-run homer against Barons starter Scott Snodgress in the bottom half of the inning to give the Suns a 3-1 lead they would not relinquish.

The Suns would go on to score four more runs over the next two innings including three in the third on a tworun single by Isaac Galloway. Snodgress would allow seven runs on nine hits over 4.0 IP before heavy rains forced the game to be called after the top of the fifth.

Thompson finished with both of the Barons' two hits on the night as the team finished their 10-game roadtrip through Mobile and Jacksonville with a 2-8 record.

With the loss, the Barons fell to 71-53 and 27-28 in the second half while Jacksonville improved to 67-54 and 33-21 in the second half.

The Barons return to Regions Field on Sunday to begin a five-game series against the Tennessee Smokies. In game one, the Barons will send RHP Scott Carroll (0-2, 9.00) to the mound against RHP Eduardo Figueroa (1-1, 3.38). First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM CDT.
