Arizona Sundogs News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - The Arizona Sundogs closed out their 2011-12 season in a thriller as they held on for a 3-2 win over the Rapid City Rush on Saturday at Tim's Toyota Center. The win snapped a 15-game losing skid against the Rush for the Sundogs.

The Sundogs withstood a 5-on-3 advantage in the final seconds after Rapid City pulled the goalie for the extra attacker.

"It was a nerve-racking finish," said Sundogs forward Kevin Petovello. "All in all the guys game through, and it was a nice way to go out."

The Sundogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period as Adam Smyth poked in a loose puck at 8:11 and Kevin Petovello buried a wrist shot from the right circle with 16 seconds left. It was Smyth's 11th of the season and Petovello's 13th.

"It's a big thing for the team," added Smyth. "The guys never quit, we had a long year. It's good to get the last one at home for the fans."

After a scoreless second, Shawn Limpright knotted the game with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the third. Smyth then added the game-winner for the Sundogs with a backhand shot from the slot at 9:55.

Scott Reid earned the win with 23 saves. Kevin Beech replaced starter Tim Boron for Rapid City in the second period and stopped 14 of 15 in the loss.

Arizona finished 0-for-8 on the power play, while the Rush went 1-for-5.

The offseason has officially begun for the Sundogs. The team will now prepare for the upcoming 2012-12 season in the Central Hockey League. Next season's roster, schedule, and other announcements will be made over the summer months.
