Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- With their playoff ticket already punched the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (32-27-7) would have been satisfied coming out of their final regular season game with the Laredo Bucks (25-38-3) healthy and tuned up for their upcoming playoff series. What they got was something for the record books, defeating the Buck 7-2 Sunday night at State Farm Arena.
Dan Gendur had a goal and an assist topping off a 73 point year for the forward, a new regular season record. The win was also their 20th win at home, the first time that feat has been accomplished since the 2008-09 season and only the third time in franchise history. Reid Edmondson also had his first career hat trick in the win.
After a quiet and tentative first period the Bees came out firing in the second. Aaron Boogaard grabbed the puck behind the Laredo net and skated towards the front where he threw the puck behind him to a waiting Edmondson.
At 17:05 Nicolas Rioux found Aaron Lee waiting at the Laredo blueline and got him the puck, Lee then flew past the defenders and fired a snipe top shelf to put the Bees up 2-0. Brandon Campos added another when he took a wide open shot from the slot that beat Bucks goaltender Ryan Rondeau clean on the glove side.
Gendur's record setting point came at 6:05 on the second period when he had the puck below the Laredo goal line, with nowhere to go he threw it on net where it banked in off the back of Rondeau to put the Bees up 4-0. Brady Leavold ended the second with a snipe off a partial break.
Laredo had some late life with two shorthanded goals but it two more goals from Edmondson completed the hat trick and sealed the win for the Bees.
The Bees will travel up to Wichita to face the top seeded Thunder in the first round of the CHL playoffs with the schedule to be announced shortly.
