Summers Shines In RiverKings Win

(Southaven, MS) - Forward Matt Summers' four point night led the Mississippi RiverKings to a 6-2 victory over the Oklahoma City Blazers on Friday night at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. Summers scored a goal and added three assists in moving the RiverKings to 19-11-0 for the season and to within four points of the Northeast Division-leading Blazers.

The win also allowed the RiverKings to equal the team's longest win streak of the season at three straight victories. Mississippi also scored a season-high four power play goals, including three straight man advantage opportunities in the second period.

Oklahoma City opened the scoring with a goal from Bill Vandermeer at 7:32, but the RiverKings tied the game with Matt Summers' sixth goal of the year at 10:24 for a 1-1 tie after one period.

Summers assisted on all three RiverKings' power play goals in the second period. Dallas Steward opened the second period onslaught with a power play goal at 13:29 of the middle session for a 2-1 lead. Garrett Larson deflected a pass to the crease for his 12th red-lighter of the year at 16:21 for a 3-1 advantage, which became 4-1 when Matt Pierce scored his eighth tally of the year at 17:04.

In the third period, Oriel McHugh brought the Blazers within two goals at 4-2 with a power play marker at 4:12, but Bobby Chaumont scored his team-leading 18th goal of the year at 12:31 for a 5-2 lead. Jeff Nelson finished off the scoring with a power play goal at 19:41 for the final 6-2 score.

Kevin Beech earned the victory between the pipes with a 20-save effort. Andy Franck took the loss for the Blazers, allowing six goals and making 24 saves.

Mississippi was 4-for-8 on the power play, while Oklahoma City was 1-for-12 with the man advantage.
