Strong Start Continues Hot Streak for South Carolina

December 28, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- The Wheeling Nailers played with a shorthanded lineup for the fourth game in a row, and despite a lackluster first period, the end of the contest turned out okay. Jeff Wyer stopped 21 of 22 shots over the course of the final two frames, while David Makowski netted the lone Wheeling goal. The South Carolina Stingrays came out on top, 5-1.

The first period went anything but the way that the Nailers had envisioned it. South Carolina opened the scoring at the 3:03 mark. Patrick Gaul slammed a shot from the left side, which was stopped by Franky Palazzese. However, Brock Higgs crashed in for the rebound, which he deposited. 4:11 later, the home team added to its advantage. Caleb Herbert slipped a backhand pass through the crease for a wide open Cody Sylvester. The former Nailer converted for the first time against his old mates. With 4:46 to go, Braden Pimm pounced on a loose puck in the crease for a power play goal and a 3-0 lead, before Derek DeBlois beat the buzzer, sneaking a shot just under the crossbar, putting the Stingrays ahead by four after twenty minutes.

Despite the overall score on the board, the Nailers were able to take a positive away from the second period, as they came out on top during that frame of action. The lone goal came at the 14:49 mark, when Derek Army won an icing race, then dropped a pass to David Makowski in the right circle. Makowski's wrist shot beat Adam Morrison over the glove, bringing the visitors within three.

One more goal was added in the third period, as Sylvester finished off a 2-on-1 rush with Wayne Simpson, lifting the Stingrays to the 5-1 win.

Adam Morrison was the winning goaltender for South Carolina, as he made 21 saves on 22 shots. Franky Palazzese surrendered four goals on 16 shots for Wheeling in the loss, before being relieved by Jeff Wyer, who shot down 21 of the 22 attempts sent his way.

The Nailers will continue their six-game road swing at the Gwinnett Gladiators on Monday at 7:05. Wheeling's next home game takes place on January 9th at 7:35 against the Reading Royals.
