One Was a Lonely Number

The Wheeling Nailers dropped the puck on the start of their season-long six-game road trip on Saturday night, but unfortunately, were unable to get off on the right foot. After falling behind 1-0 in the opening stanza, Morgan Ellis drew the visitors even in the early stages of the second period, powering home a one-timer from the top of the zone. The goal was set up by Nicholas Kuqali, who was one of four players making his season debut for the Nailers, and also Tyler Fernandez. Ellis' marker gives him the team lead in points by a defenseman (10), while tying Zach Yuen for the team lead in goals by a defenseman (3). Franky Palazzese made 34 saves on 36 shots, but suffered the defeat between the pipes.

Ch(e)rning in the Points

The South Carolina Stingrays continued their blazing hot play as of late, improving their record to 10-1-1 in the last 12 games, with Saturday night's 3-1 victory over the Nailers. One player who played a large part in the end result was forward Andrew Cherniwchan, who broke a 1-1 tie with a power play goal at the 17:32 mark of the second period, before tacking on an empty net tally in the contest's final second. That performance gave Cherniwchan seven points in his last four games, while lifting South Carolina's record to 7-2-1 when he is in the lineup this season. The third year pro played in just 17 ECHL games last season, spending the majority of the campaign with the AHL's Providence Bruins.

Make it a Baker's Dozen

Tyler Murovich became the most recent member of the Nailers to get the call from the next level, as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins recalled the veteran forward on Sunday morning. With Murovich's recall, there are currently 13 players from the 2014-15 Nailers on American Hockey League rosters, while 16 total players have found their way to hockey's AAA level this season. One of those players is forward Riley Brace, who snagged an assist in his season debut with the Worcester Sharks on Saturday night. Last year, Wheeling had 22 players see action in both the AHL and ECHL.

Making Themselves Comfortable at Home

While WesBanco Arena was filled with home games for the Nailers in December, Wheeling's home numbers aren't quite in the neighborhood of the Stingrays, who will cross the midway mark of their home season on Sunday, taking the ice for their 19th game at North Charleston Coliseum. South Carolina hasn't completely thrived on home ice in 2014-15, but has compiled a winning record, going 8-6-4 during the first half of its home slate. Since a three-game road trip through Elmira and Reading earlier in December, the Stingrays have gone 6-0-1 in their last seven games, playing six of those seven tilts in the Palmetto State. South Carolina's longest road trip of the year will be seven games long, at the end of March and beginning of April.

Rubber Game of the Series

Sunday afternoon marks the third and final head-to-head meeting between the Nailers and Stingrays this season, with all three battles between the two clubs taking place at North Charleston Coliseum. With its 3-1 win on Saturday, South Carolina tied the season series at one each, answering a 5-1 thumping by Wheeling on October 25th. Three of the Nailers' six goals in the first two games have been scored by defensemen, with Zach Yuen tallying twice and Morgan Ellis once. In addition to tying the 2014-15 set, the Stingrays also drew even in the historical season, as the two sides enter their 21st clash knotted at ten. South Carolina has come out on top in seven of 12 games on home ice, where the teams will meet in regular season play for the fourth time in a row.

The Nailers will have a three-game homestand from January 9th-11th.

Reading comes to town on the 9th for Faith & Family Night, which will also be a Flat Screen Friday, courtesy of The Highlands, as well as the Law Firm of Bordas and Bordas. In addition, a player poster will be given to the first 2,000 fans in attendance, thanks to RSQP Print & Design.

Elmira is the opposition on the 10th, as the Nailers will be holding a Princess Party from 6-7. Only 100 tickets are available for the party. That game will also be the annual Girl Scout Night.

Finally, Indy pays a visit on the 11th for a Family Funday with $5 kids tickets, a post game skate with the team, and another Oglebay Good Zoo Day.

Wheeling Nailers 2014-15 season tickets, flex tickets, group tickets and single-game tickets are on sale now. For more information, call 304-234-GOAL or visit wheelingnailers.com.
