North Charleston, S.C. - Forward Wayne Simpson registered three assists for forward Cody Sylvester added two goals to propel the South Carolina Stingrays (15-10-1-4) over the Wheeling Nailers (12-14-0-0) 5-1 on USO Holdover Troops Day at the North Charleston Coliseum Sunday afternoon. The win pushed the Stingrays' point streak to seven contests (6-0-1-0) and are unbeaten in 12 of their last 13 games (11-1-1-0).
The Stingrays lit the lamp four times in the opening period to take a 4-0 advantage into the first intermission. Forward Brock Higgs kicked off the scoring 3:03 into the game knocking a rebound under the pads of Nailers goaltender Franky Palazzese (L, 12 saves on 16 shots) off the left-wing circle. Sylvester made it a two-goal lead moments later at 7:11 sliding in a pass from forward Caleb Herbert. Rookie Braden Pimm capitalized on the power play for his ninth goal of the season at 15:14 smashing a rebound past Palazzese after he made a backdoor stop on forward Brandon Hynes. With less than a second to play, forward Derek DeBlois completed the period scoring by rifling a shot over the Palazzese's glove from the right-wing circle.
Nailers goaltender Jeff Wyer (21 saves on 22 shots) entered the contest at the start of the second period and Wheeling jumped on the score sheet at 14:59 when defenseman David Makowski jumped into the rush and lifted a shot over the glove of Stingrays goalie Adam Morrison (W, 21 saves on 22 shots) at the right-wing circle.
Sylvester buried the final goal of the game at 14:52 of the third period redirecting a pass from Simpson past Wyer. The Stingrays finished the game 1-for-5 on the power play while the Nailers went 0-for-4.
