Lancaster Stormers News Release
Southern Maryland struck for three quick runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, then won it on a one-out bloop single by Christian Lopez in the tenth, handing the Barnstormers the 4-3 loss at Regency Furniture Stadium.
Tim McNab, who entered with two outs in the eighth, struck out Jeremy Owens to open the ninth with a 3-0 lead. Lopez followed with a ground single up the middle. Kody Kirkland rode the next pitch into the left center field alley for an RBI double. Casey Benjamin tied the game with an opposite field home run onto the picnic deck in Waldorf, his eighth homer of the season.
Charlie Weatherby (1-1) was brought into the game for the tenth inning. He walked Jason Lane on a close 3-2 pitch before striking out Travis Garcia. Owens singled to left center on an 0-2 pitch, chasing Lane to third. With the infielders playing tighter than normal double play depth, Lopez lobbed a fly ball that barely reached the outfield grass, just past the outstretched glove of second baseman Lloyd Turner for the game winner.
The Barnstormers chipped away at Jarrett Santos early. Bryant Nelson and Michael Woods opened the night with consecutive singles. Nelson got to third as Jason Perry hit into a force play and scored on a deep sacrifice fly to right center by Aaron Herr.
Jed Morris slapped a double into the left center gap to start the second and eventually scored on a bases loaded single by Woods, the second of four hits by the Barnstormers left fielder. Joe Gaetti was thrown out at the plate by Shawn Cumberland, preventing a second run from scoring in the inning.
The third run crossed the plate in the seventh. Woods broke from first with two outs, and Herr placed a fly ball over Lane's head in left for an RBI double.
Jose Sanchez maneuvered through an obstacle course for seven shutout innings. He got a double play from Patrick Osborn in the first with two runners aboard. Gaetti cut down Kirkland at the plate on a Benjamin single in the third, and Eric Crozier was marooned at third after a leadoff triple off the left field scoreboard in the fourth. The right-hander loaded the bases with two walks and a single in the fifth inning before escaping on a shallow fly ball and a grounder to second. Overall, the Lancaster starter allowed six hits and walked six while striking out five.
The two clubs will play the rubber game of the series on Thursday morning at 11:05. Ben Fritz (2-5) gets the start against lefty Craig Anderson (4-1). Following the game, the Barnstormers will head home to take on the Camden Riversharks in a three-game series starting Friday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
