Somerset Patriots News Release
Seven different hitters had at least one of 13 runs driven in and Justin Jones pitched seven sparkling innings as the Somerset Patriots snapped a four-game losing streak and picked up their first win of the second half with a 13-1 showing over the Camden Riversharks at Campbells Field on Tuesday night.
Somerset's offense got down to business from the early going and would roll all night as every Patriot starter scored a run. Former Major Leaguer catcher Ben Davis took the bump in his second career start against Somerset with David Housel getting the night started in the 2nd with a two-out run-scoring triple, bringing Noah Hall home. Hall returned the favor in the 3rd with two outs, banging a single down the left field line driving in a pair. A two-run Wayne Lydon triple and a two-run two-out single from Pete LaForest marked a four-run 4th inning and suddenly, Somerset was up by a touchdown. Davis (2-5) exited the game after just 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits, walking a pair and hitting two batters, needing 90 pitches to gather just 11 outs.
Somerset starter Justin Jones would not need all the offense as he produced an impressive outing. Jones retired 14 of the first 16 men he faced, four on strikeouts. It was not until the 5th inning that Camden threatened when former Patriot Vito Chiaravalloti reached via error, Richie Robnett doubled Chiaravalloti to third, and Shea Harris drove in the lone Camden run, an unearned tally. Jones (4-5) settled down despite the blemish against him, sending down seven of the final nine men that came to bat, including Harris on a strikeout to finish his night. Jones tossed 7.0 innings allowing just six hits and the lone unearned run, notching his first victory in nearly two months.
Somerset's offense didnt quit though, putting up a five-spot in the 6th inning against Gabriel Alfaro. After Josh Pressley had driven in Tim Raines Jr. with one out, Alfaro got Jeff Nettles to line out. But back-to-back walks to LaForest and Hall left the bases loaded for new pitcher Jeremy Lewis. After a ball and a strike was delivered to Jason Belcher, the next offering was promptly lifted over the right-field wall for a grand slam, capping off the inning, putting Somerset up 12-1. Elliott Ayala drove in a two-out 9th inning run for the final punch.
On Wednesday, Somerset (1-4, 37-38) sends Casey Cahill (1-3, 4.72) to the mound while Camden (2-3, 41-34) will counter with Travis Chick (5-3, 5.02). Coverage begins at 7:00 pm on 1450 WCTC-AM and online at www.wctcam.com and www.somersetpatriots.com.
