Former Newark Bears outfielder Charlton Jimerson delivered a two-run single to highlight a six-run fourth inning rally and Matt Pike scattered six hits over eight innings to earn his ninth win of the season, leading the Bridgeport Bluefish to a 12-2 victory over the Bears Wednesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Bluefish broke a scoreless deadlock by scoring six times in the top of the fourth off Bears starter "Bubba" O'Donnell (4-4), in an inning where O'Donnell just lost his control, walking four in the inning. Bridgeport sent 10 men to the plate in the inning, with Danny Putnam drawing a walk to leadoff. Luis Lopez reached on an error and Hiram Bocachica also drew a free pass, loading the bases. Luis Rodriguez lifted a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the game and Adam Greenberg and Brandon Chaves drew consecutive walks, with Chaves' walk driving in the second run, ending O'Donnell's day after 3 1/3 innings.
Reliever Michael Mehlich struck out the first batter he faced, but then Jimerson, who was the Bears' top regular hitter a year ago, came through with a two-run single to push the lead to 4-0. Josh Phelps
then followed with a two-run single of his own, increasing Bridgeport's advantage to 6-0.
Bocachica hit a solo homer in the fifth inning to give Bridgeport a 7-0 lead, before the Bears finally got to Pike for two runs in the home fifth. Brian Barton led off the inning with a long triple off the batter's eye in straight-away centerfield and scored on the same play on an error. Randy Gress belted a solo homer to left, his first homer of the season. Pike, though would not surrender another run the rest of the way, allowing only one hit over his final three frames. He also retired the last nine batters he faced. Miguel Saladin finished up in the final inning for Bridgeport.
Bridgeport catcher Rodriguez padded the lead with a two-run double in the ninth inning and Steven Moss blasted a three-run homer in the same frame, giving the Bluefish a five-run final inning. Rodriguez and Moss both had two hits and three RBI for the winners.
The series and home stand wraps up with a rubber game on Thursday night.
Game time is set for 6:35 p.m., with the gates of Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium opening at 5:35 p.m.
