Windy City ThunderBolts News Release

Ross Stout allowed two runs, pitching into the eighth as the Windy City ThunderBolts downed the Rockford RiverHawks 4-2.

Rockford got the first run of the game in the third inning when Ross McCoy singled, moved up on a sacrifice, took third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Windy City would respond in the next frame as Robert Perry doubled and came into score on a throwing error from RiverHawks shortstop Jono Brooks, tying the game at 1-1.

The ThunderBolts would break the tie in the sixth as with one out, three straight singles from Guillermo Martinez, Perry and J. T. Restko scored a run to make it 2-1. After a groundout, Kraig Binick singled, scoring Perry for a 3-1 Windy City edge. The next inning Dan Jordan came up with two outs and blasted a solo homer out to left, his ninth of the year, pushing the advantage to 4-1.

Things got a little tense in the bottom of the seventh when Rockford put two on with two out. Ross McCoy lined a sharp single into left. Binick charged hard, picked it on one bounce and fired to the infield. Gil Zayas cut the ball and executed a perfect relay to Dan Jordan who applied the tag on Brandon Cohen to end the inning. The RiverHawks were able to bring across a run in the eighth on an infield single from Jason James, Matt Jernstad was able to come on in a relief role and get Derrick Walker to fly out to right to end the threat.

The ninth might have been the biggest tightrope that Windy City had to walk all season as the bases were loaded with one out. Jono Brooks hit a check swing roller to Nick Hall on the mound. Hall was able to field and flip on to Jordan at the plate for a force out, keeping the bases loaded with two outs. Caleb Fields came up and grounded a ball in the hole on the left side. Guillermo Martinez made a sliding stop and threw to Gilberto Mejia covering at second for the final out of the ballgame.

Stout (13-5) was magnificent in the win going 7.2 innings allowing six hits, striking out nine. Nick Hall earned his 11th save of the season. Kyle Wright took the loss for Rockford.

The series finale is on Sunday with Dustin Pease (11-7, 3.95) for Windy City. The RiverHawks starter has not been announced. The game will be on 88.3 FM, WXAV with Bolts Backtrack starting at 5:30. Windy City will host the Chicago Blackhawks Alumni softball game on September 7 at 4:00 p.m. It is a 16" softball game between the Blackhawks Alumni and the Chicago Fire and Police Departments.
