River City Rascals News Release

MARION, IL - The Rascals survived a late comeback from the Miners and held on for a 4-3 win in front of 4,862 Saturday night at Rent One Park. The victory secured the Rascals first West Division title since 2000 and extended their winning streak to a season high seven games.

River City (56-37) entered the ninth inning with a 4-2 lead and Jason Lowey on the mound. Landon Camp singled and Will Block followed with a walk to put two on with no one out. Andrew Sweet laid down a bunt that first baseman, Ernie Banks, tossed to third for the first out and Ryan Wehrle completed the double play at first to Bryan Resnick. Pinch hitter, Adam Hale, walked with two outs to set up first and second for Jereme Milons. The centerfielder slapped a line drive past Banks at first and into the right field corner. Block scored from second and pinch runner, Brad Netzel, was out at home plate on the relay throw from Houin to Banks to Sawyer to give the Rascals a 4-3 victory.

Southern Illinois (55-40) was shut out and no hit by Stephen Flake (6-4) through 5.2 innings. Stephen Holdren broke up the no-hitter with a single and Joey Metropoulos followed with a double to get the Miners on the board. Brad Miller made it three consecutive hits and singled home Metropoulos to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Flake completed six innings for his fifth victory with the Rascals and sixth overall. The former Windy City hurler struck out four and allowed two runs on three hits with three walks.

The Rascals jumped out early on Ryan Kussmaul (4-1) with an unearned run in the second on a Kussmaul throwing error, plating Gutierrez from second on a Houin infield single. Kussmaul launched the ball over Miller's head at first to allow Gutierrez to score. Wehrle added a sacrifice fly in the third to score Chad Maddox, who led off with a double.

River City got what proved to be the winning runs in the fifth, loading the bases with one out. Houin walked and Batten singled against Kussmaul, who then intentionally walked Banks for the second time in the game to load the bases for Wehrle. The University of Nebraska product singled up the middle for a 4-0 Rascal lead.

Kussmaul was tagged with his first loss, tossing seven innings allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with strikeouts, four walks and two hit batters.

Five different Rascals had a hit while Wehrle compiled all three runs batted in for River City. Lowey picked up save number 24 despite allowing a run in the bottom of the ninth.

The Rascals can still pick up the number one overall seed in the playoffs with a victory tomorrow and a Kalamazoo loss to Traverse City. Quinn Monsma (1-1) and Brett Scarpetta (6-4) is the starting pitching matchup. First pitch for the regular season finale is set for 7:05 p.m. in Marion.
