Wild Things Lose; Chris Sidick Sets Record

September 5, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA -- The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, witnessed the best of times and the worst of times at CONSOL Energy Park Saturday night. Washington gave up a six run lead, and eventually fell to Florence 13-8, but Chris Sidick set yet another league record.

The first three innings were the best of times....Washington took a quick lead, scoring six runs in the first three innings. The scoring got underway in the first inning when Chris Sidick, the Frontier League's all-time triples leader, tripled to set the all- time hits record in the league and to drive in Michael Parker. Matt Sutton scored twice on errors, once in the first and once in the third. And Brett Grandstrand doubled to drive in two in the third. At the end of three innings, Washington held a six run lead.

Times got tougher in the fourth inning when Florence scored three runs, and in the fifth Erold Andrus's solo shot pulled the Freedom to within two.

Grandstrand came up with another RBI to plate Matt Sutton in the fifth inning.

But the tough times appeared to be the worst in the seventh inning when Jay Johnson hit a grand slam to give Florence their first lead of the game.

Grant Psomas forced extra innings when he tied the game with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Florence scored five runs in the eleventh, including another Johnson home run, this time a three run bomb to give the Freedom the victory.

Brian McCullough, who started the game, allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in five innings. Justin Edwards, Chris Kupillas, Nick Peterson, and Mike Darrah all pitched relief. Edwards (4-5) took the loss for Washington in 2.2 innings of work.

The Wild Things and Freedom meet for the final game of the 2009 season Sunday when first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Air time on WJPA 95.3 F.M. is 1:55 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office.
