Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums finally found a way to beat Bernard Robert, knocking off the Kalamazoo Kings 5-2 at Wuerfel Park on Saturday night.
Robby Alcombrack put the Beach Bums in front with his 10th homer of the season in the bottom of the second against Robert, who was 3-0 in his first three starts against Traverse City this season with an ERA of 1.44. The homer was a two-run blast that came with one out and Mike Victor on base following a leadoff single.
Traverse City made it a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning. Mike Epping reached with a one out bunt single and went to second when the throw got into right. Brad Miller drove home Epping with a single up the middle. Michael Campbell followed with a single and with two outs Andrew Franco drove in a run with an opposite field single to left on the first pitch. Bernard Robert lasted just five innings in taking the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits.
David Dinelli made his final start of the season and despite some wildness had allowed just two hits into the sixth inning. He departed after walking the first two batters. Shawn Joy entered and gave up a double to Matt Maloney that plated a pair. Dinelli picked up his fourth win by allowing two runs while walking seven and striking out four.
The Beach Bums added insurance in the seventh. Michael Campbell doubled with one out and stole third. He crossed the plate when Andrew Franco again took the first pitch the other way to left. David Hurst tallied his sixth save by throwing the ninth. He walked two to allow the tying run to come to the plate before striking out Destan Makonnen to end the game.
Offensively, the Beach Bums amassed 13 hits. Michael Campbell led the way with three hits including a pair of doubles. Andrew Franco finished with two hits and drove in a pair while Robby Alcombrack also knocked in two.
The Beach Bums (42-52) will conclude the 2009 season tomorrow night with another contest against the Kalamazoo Kings at 5:05pm. RHP Jason Kiley (6-9, 5.22) takes to the mound for the Beach Bums with LHP Brandon Parillo (2-4, 3.54) set to make the start for Kalamazoo, who as of this writing still hadn't clinched the East Division with Lake Erie and Midwest in extra innings. It will be fan appreciation night at Wuerfel Park and also Elvis Night with Elvis impersonator Jake Slater making a return appearance. Fireworks will officially close out the season after the game.
